Story

I grew up near the historic Neanderthal Valley, where the first Neanderthal skeleton was found in 1856. The valley itself was named after the significant 17th century hymn composer Joachim Neander, who often visited the area and composed in nature.

Impressed by Nils Frahm’s use of pipe organs and also Hans Zimmer’s Interstellar score, I wanted to learn more about this instrument. Through a friend I got the opportunity to sample the local pipe organ in my old hometown. My project was supported by a grant from the German Federal Government for Culture and Media and the German collecting society GEMA.

The Neanderthal Pipe Organ has made it onto German television. The composer duo Christian Biegai and Kerim König used the pipe organ library prominently in the opening scene and also the finale of an episode of the TV crime series "Rookies" ("Blutige Anfänger"). Episode "Sündenfall" is available in ZDF Mediathek on demand now and will be shown on ZDF TV on 04 January 2023.

“Beautiful job, Daniel – and what a great name for this organ too. Keep up the fine work!”
